House Keeping (5S)
In PTE 5S activity started in early nineties, but the awareness
among all the employees was revived through a specialized workshop
conducted by corporate WCM cell in the year 1998. Later, all the
related literature has been translated in Bahasa. All the 1827 employees
have been covered through workshop and practical training by identified
faculty.
· S1 Ownership concept in PT. Elegant has been developed
through the deployment of 5S. The whole plant was divided in 7 zones
and all the employees are divided into 269 teams. Unnecessary items
lying in all the areas are sorted out regularly. Standard disposal
format is reviewed from time to time and scrap policy has been prepared.
· S2 Each and every item has been kept in proper place. Self-motivated
dynamic employees with good communication skill have been selected
as leaders. Each shop floor team has prepared schedule of activities
to be carried out in its own area. Teams are given fixed targets.
Area checklist has been prepared which is followed by the teams
in their own areas. Deployment activities are reflected through
the score of the team in QCDIP.
By rearrangement of Ring frame machines on shop floor we have saved
600sq meter space (66,400 USD)
· S3 Cleaning kits are available in their required places.
Cleaning standards and checklist-approach are followed. Cleaning
frequency has been decided. Attitude of “Cleaning is inspection”
is developed among employees. 'No fly & fluff on machine and
floor' drive has been carried out through out the organization.
As an impact of the cleaning of machines by the operators as per
daily schedule distributed in three shifts, we have achieved lower
frequency of maintenance cleaning (25%)
· S4 To maintain and percolate the 5S philosophy more deeply,
everybody in the factory has developed the consciousness that they
are promoting the activity of 5S wholeheartedly. 5S has become an
integral part of their daily management through out the plant. Work
instructions ( S.O.P ) are displayed in each and every department.
Safety posters are displayed on each group of machines. Lubrication
color codes, direction of material flow, attractive design sign
to emergency exit points and fire extinguishers have been developed.
· S5 In respect of discipline in PTE, all the employees are
following the company's rules and regulation religiously. All the
employees are coming in company Uniform. Regarding quality, safety
and pollution, total awareness has been developed among the employees.
Also, feed back methodology in case of deviation is practiced frequently.
Employees are trained to deal with emergencies.
Three Level 5S Assessment
Implementations of 5S are evaluated by assessment of housekeeping
through out the plant and offices. Assessment of 5S activities are
being carried out in three stages. First self audit by the team
leader and zone leader in their zone. If the scores are above 70%,
then it is eligible for 5S subcommittee audit. The areas which achieved
more than 85% in the 5S subcommittee audit are finally audited by
senior management.
Application of Visual Management in Housekeeping
Through the display of variation control, trouble shooting and process
performance board we have achieved the highest level of performance
in each machine and process. All the pressure gauges are marked
with operating range. One point lesson and SOPs displayed in each
area help us to avoid many expensive mistakes and major failure.
Trouble shooting and safety posters displayed on the machine save
major breakdown and accident on the shop floor.
